Kainos pledges to make 100 hires in Birmingham in the next year

Leading provider of digital services and platforms, Kainos, has announced it has expanded its presence in Birmingham’s iconic Alpha Tower as it grows its footprint in the city. In the past year, Kainos has hired 479 people globally, including 80 in Birmingham, while the company plans to hire a further 100 employees in Birmingham within the next financial year.

Kainos’ expansion is well aligned to West Midlands Mayor Andy Street’s economic strategy, which includes an ambitious target to create 29,000 digital and creative jobs by 2030. Fittingly, Mayor Street discussed these plans at the Kainos office opening event, offering his views on how Birmingham can lead today’s digital economy.

“Birmingham is the biggest digital hub outside of London, so it’s a natural fit for us to set up camp here. Mayor Andy Street’s plan embodies the kind of forward-thinking that we need from public leaders to ensure all cities in the UK – not just London – can compete, by making sure the needs of the digital sector are considered, and delivering the infrastructure that can help business succeed, so you can imagine our delight that he is able to host our event,” comments Brendan Mooney, CEO at Kainos.

“Birmingham is buzzing, a real hotbed of talent and we are excited to be growing the team here. We see a huge opportunity in the region to grow our client base too. Over the past year we have already made some significant wins – with new projects at organisations such as DEFRA and Telensa.”

From entry level to experienced tech professionals, Kainos has been working to identify local talent across the whole spectrum, and for the coming year has sights set on hires with experience working in data, product, design and engineering. Kainos has fostered strong relationships with local universities and schools as it builds the next generation of digital talent, with more than a quarter of its 80 Birmingham hires having graduated from local universities. A number of the students hired were identified through the Kainos Academy – a training and recruitment programme offering a range of courses and work placement opportunities, which has helped over 5,000 people since its launch.

“Birmingham has a number of prestigious universities, both in the city and the surrounding areas, and we want to offer students the opportunity to work right here in the city they love,” Mooney concludes.

“Over the coming years we want to build on the success of our regular A.I.Camp and CodeCamp events to develop even stronger relationships with leading universities, local schools, government departments and other businesses – to ensure we are all doing as much as we can to educate children about potential careers in IT and retain talent in Birmingham. We have also been impressed with the level of experienced talent in the area; the combination of potential and existing digital skills means we are confident Birmingham can provide the people we need to make this expansion a success.”
